Thurston Building Systems were awarded the contract to design and build the new driver’s accommodation facility at Northfields Depot in London. The facility consists of offices, booking on desk, locker rooms, ablution and recreation rooms. At the outset of the contract it was identified that the entrance road serving Northfields Depot would provide its own challenges when delivering the modular units. The road is very narrow and needed to be kept open to foot traffic during the installation period. This was achieved through close consultation with station management staff and close supervision during the installation process. As part of the contract conditions all operatives under the Thurston Building Systems umbrella needed to pass the London underground LUCAS training scheme.
The installation driver’s facility was transported from our Wakefield factory in pre-fabricated modules via the motorway network to the site in Northfields, where the delivery vehicles were parked up away from site to stagger the delivery to minimize any disruption to the Depot during the installation period. Once the installation of the bays were completed, work could simultaneously commence on both the internal fit out and the external cladding. The building was clad with a bespoke system giving the building a distinctive contemporary appearance.
The building achieved an EPC rating of A, this is the first time we have achieved this rating on such a large building.
