A community sports changing facility was required to help revitalise sporting activities in the region. The building had to be secure and flexible in layout, meet all health and safety standards, and comply with the conditions attached to a £910,000 Football Foundation grant.
Thurston worked in partnership with the council’s senior parks manager to design and build highly flexible changing accommodation. The layout, which comprises male and female facilities in blocks of four, can be cordoned off as required, enabling, for example, separate accommodation for juniors, seniors, males and females. Completed in less than four months, the building is vandal-resistant both inside and out.
Since completion, the number of footballers using the site has increased from 60,000 to 90,000 and it is now a training ground for Halifax Town, as well as being popular with five-a-side and grass roots football teams.
